Former Trustee H. A. “Hap” Wagner Remembered
On Thursday, July 26, 2018, Harold A. “Hap” Wagner, former CEO of Air Products and Chemicals, Inc., and Trustee of The Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust passed away. He was 82.
Mr. Wagner served The Trust as Chairman from 1996 to 2005, during which time he oversaw the distribution of more than $50 million in grant awards to support programs and services that improved the health of the citizens of the Lehigh Valley.
Executive Director of The Trust, Edward F. Meehan, MPH, who worked closely with Mr. Wagner, recalls his approach to service and leadership closely mirrored that of The Trust’s founder, Leonard Parker Pool. “Hap was also a true visionary,” Meehan says. “He led The Trust through pivotal years and was influential in moving our work toward a broader view of individual and community health.”
Mr. Wagner began his career with Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. in 1963 and held various positions within the company. He served in U.S. locations and the United Kingdom as he continually progressed through roles until being elected Chairman and Chief Executive Officer in 1992. He held that role through retirement in 2000.
In addition to serving The Dorothy Rider Pool Health Care Trust, Mr. Wagner served on the Board of Trustees of Lehigh University and as a member of the KidsPeace ® National Council for Kids. To both his professional and civic roles, he brought a strong educational background with an undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering from Stanford University and an MBA from Harvard University. Originally from California, Mr. Wagner made a tremendous impact on the Lehigh Valley region. His leadership will be missed.
